Can I Eat Low Sodium at Church’s Chicken

Can I Eat Low Sodium at Church’s Chicken

What ever happened to chicken? It was supposed to be the “healthier” choice. It was supposed to be the easy to look at the menu and order as it was so much healthier than beef or pork. Yet nothing could be farther from the truth in the reality of chicken in restaurants today. Chicken is one of the most over processed forms of protein found on menus. Then, this processed food is breaded, fried, or overly seasoned, knocking sodium way over the top. It’s rare to find a Chicken Restaurant that has low sodium choices. So let’s find out if we can eat and stay low sodium at Churchs Chicken.

Chicken Restaurants Are Frustrating

Due to all of the stuff mentioned above, it is extremely hard to find a chicken restaurant to find low sodium offerings. Most end up on the list of restaurants with high sodium menus to avoid. Places like Kentucky Fried Chicken, Popeye’s, Bojangle’s, Zaxby’s, and Buffalo Wild Wings are all there. Up until today, I have only found two restaurants where we can find low sodium options: Chik-Fil-A and El Pollo Loco. Now we can finally add a third! Let’s find out more.

What Qualifies As A Low Sodium Meal Option?

We are looking for an entree, side, and beverage. It has to be off of the main menu instead of the kids menu. That’s hardly dignified if we have to order from the kids menu. The USDA recommends no more than 2300 mg of sodium per day for a person who is totally healthy.

The American Heart Association (AHA) and the Mayo Clinic recommend no more than 1500 mg of sodium per day for everyone who has high blood pressure, heart disease, is a woman, is a person of color, or is over the age of 50. Which sadly covers a majority of the U. S. Population. So we want a meal that runs about 500-700 mg to equal one third of our daily limit.

  1. How much sodium is in the fried okra? If you skip the roll and dessert, how much would be in a breast? Thanks!

      Hi Mary;

      If I don’t put it on the list, it is too high. The fried okra is 740 mg for a regular or 2100 mg for a large. Way off the menu. An original breast is 680 mg and a spicy one is 800 mg. Again, not on the menu for us! Sorry!
