Update on Christopher Lower

Update from his wife Mary Lower:

Thank you for the love and support you’ve shown me and the kids. Christopher Lower’s obituary (below) will run tomorrow in the Star Tribune newspaper but since we do so much of our communication on the blog, I thought I’d get these details of the Celebration of Life Service to you directly. If you can join us Jan 6 at the service at 11AM, please be sure to share a story. I’m making memory books for the kids so please mail/Email/PM/post favorite memories/adventures/Chris-isms to me please. ([email protected])

Hacking Salt will go on – please allow me a little grace as I get things figured out.   — Mary

  1. Dear Mary:

I am so very saddened to hear of Chris’s passing. He was such a devoted advocate for heart patients who are looking for low sodium recipes and products to maintain their health. I found his website while searching the internet for low sodium recipes and products for my grandon, who was diagnosed with congestive heart failure back in March of this year. I thought I had died and gone to heaven when I found his website, recipes and converted restaurant menus/recipes to enable my grandson to make better food choices when eating at some of his favorite restaurants. I have made several of Chris’s delicious recipes and bought the low sodium products he has suggested to enhance my grandson’s food choices. Chris was a fabulous guy and so dedicated to his cause to help others, while being so ill at the time. I am so very grateful and fortunate to have been able to have enjoyed his knowledge, fortitude and love of cooking he shared with us all. He will truly be missed. My prayers and condolences go out to you and your children during this difficult time.

  2. I am so sorry to learn of Chris’s passing and will keep your family in my prayers. I first learned about Chris’ cookbook and website from a nurse at the heart failure clinic at Mayo in Rochester, MN. His work has been a great blessing and help in my dietary journey of eating within the sodium guidelines I’ve been given as a heart failure patient. God bless you all.

  3. Many blessings and condolences to you and your family Mary.. am truly sorry but he is healed once more in our Father’s kingdom and i am truly honored to of been able to of speak with him via Facebook before this took him home and make him whole again.. I am thankful for having learn of his work amd sites and have gotten the book to help heal my heart failure i have been diagnosed with just this year.. many hugs filled with love and prayers sent for you, the children and family and friends..

  4. I am very sorry for your loss. I’ve enjoyed his blog and recently purchased his cookbook. He was an inspiration to those of us fighting the sodium battle. May your family find some peace and comfort knowing that he helped so many people in his quest.

My heartfelt sympathy to you, his children, family and friends.

Please accept my sympathy for you and your family. As I am a relatively newcomer to hacking salt, Iwas not aware of Christopher”s precarious state. Of course I knew he was a heart failure patient, but still, his death comes as a surprise. I am so sorry.

  6. Mary, incredibly sorry to hear about your husbands passing. Chris has helped my life in more ways than one. Not as extreme, but I’ve been recently diagnosed with high blood pressure and Chris’ cookbook and blog have been a valuable source in my new low sodium diet. My blessing and prayers to you and your family. Is there any way for people to help who aren’t able to make the service? Perhaps a GoFundMe page? Please keep me posted – would love to help in any way possible.

Frank – thanks for your note and desire to help. In his obituary I just posted on the blog there is an address you can send support for our family. Thank you – Mary

  7. My condolences. I loved every one of Chris’ e mails. He helped me immensely. Again, I’m so sorry. He will be missed.

  8. God bless you and your kids. I have followed the blog and bought his cookbook. Am so sorry to hear this. Thanks to Chris for all he did.

  9. So sorry to read of Chris’ passing. As a menierre’s sufferer I am often frustrated by so called “healthy” foods turning out to be loaded in sodium. There is very little out there to help when watching sodium. I was so happy to find the Hacking Salt blog and especially the posts on choices at different restaurants. I really admire that he used his own fight to help the rest of us. Wishing you and your family little moments of joy and peace to break through the grief.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I just recently stumbled upon this blog and nearly jumped out of my seat when I found it. I suffer from Meniere’s Disease where a low sodium diet is a necessity and often times feel depressed and defeated because of how hard it is to maintain one. This blog gave me hope. Sending love and positive thoughts to you and your family. He certainly touched more lives than you know!

  11. I am so sorry for your loss. I appreciated all Christopher shared via this blog, as someone who was watching my sodium intake for health reasons. His recipes and information have been so helpful, and I am grateful that he was able to turn his medical challenges into something greater for those of us who never even met him. Sending thoughts of peace and healing to your entire family.

  12. I’m so sorry about Chris. His insight and experiences helped me greatly after my heart attack.
Bless you, be strong, and know that he made a tremendous impact on so many.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I was just diagnosed with heart failure, and was so grateful to find this site in my search for low-sodium options.

  14. Prayers go out to Chris’s Family

It was Sept. this year that I had a Heart attic and started to find ideas on how to cook with no or very low sodium and that is when I found Chris’s Facebook group ( Hacking Salt ) and started to look at all the post’s there on low to no sodium cooking and recipes that He came up with

I also had found if anyone had a question about something that Chris would always be around to help out with his own recipe or ideas to
improve a recipe for another person,

I my self was all new to this low sodium Life style and was eager to learn, and Chris was always there to help when I or someone else needed help with
    cooking with something new,

That is when I found His cookbook and started to look through it and thought, This is one Heck of a Guy to do this work for everyone else
He will be truly missed by a lot of People that He had affected and there way of life to a Better Healthier way to eating

  15. I’m so sorry for your loss. Christopher’s support and passion and creativity have been a light for those of us living with conditions that require extremely low-sodium diets. His work has contributed to my continued survival, and that’s not an exaggeration. Along with the legacy I know he leaves to his loved ones, he also leaves a legacy of helping save and improve the lives of a widespread group of relative strangers with whom he chose to share the results of his efforts. Thank you so much for aiding his work and gracefully supporting him in sharing his time with us.
