Great Tasting Low Sodium BBQ Rubs

Great Tasting Low Sodium BBQ Rubs

Grilling and BBQ are a challenging style of cooking for those of us on a low sodium diet. Many of the proteins that are grilled are typically brined or salt cured. Many recipes call for salt in the rubs, cures, brines, and sauces. It quickly adds up and would knock those dishes off of our list. But you can change that. You can go low sodium when you make your own rubs and cook from scratch. I have an awesome recipe for a low sodium BBQ rub and sauce. Since we don’t always have time to cook from scratch, I appreciate it when I can find great tasting low sodium BBQ rubs I can buy.

Do Boyz Butt Dust BBQ Rubs

I was cruising Twitter and was excited to find this stuff. Eric Williams started making salt free spice rubs because his own family had dietary restrictions and he didn’t want them to have to give up their favorite foods because of it. His BBQ Rubs are great additions for whatever you are grilling, roasting, or baking. With Brown Sugar as a foundational ingredient in his rubs, they quickly caramelize to form a great “bark” or “crust” that is prized in perfect BBQ. He has four varieties that work within our low sodium requirements.

Lemon Pepper Butt Dust

The DoBoyz Lemon Pepper Butt Dust is a bright lemony blend of lemon granules, Parmesan, and other herbs and spices. There is no salt, no MSG, and no potassium chloride. There is sodium in the Parmesan, but it is less than 5% of USDA Daily Allowance, so it still qualifies as a very low sodium choice.

I put it to the test on Cod and Chicken Drumsticks. It was great! It is a favorite of my wife and Wondertwin Daughter, so I knew it had earned a slot in the spice rack.

Do Boyz Original Butt Dust

The Do Boyz Original Butt Dust was the start of the product line. Bold and sweet with notes of smoky paprika blended with brown sugar, garlic, onion, and other herbs and spices. No salt or MSG. This blend was flavorful enough to please all of the palettes in our household. The spice level was mild and it was great on pork chops and chicken.

I would use this as a rub for your meat. then after grilling it would pair nicely with a low sodium BBQ Sauce. Or it can replace a sauce altogether and still deliver an authentic BBQ flavor. The sweetness of the brown sugar reminds me of Texas or St. Louis BBQ.

Do Boyz Hott Butt Dust

The Do Boyz Hott Butt Dust kicks the heat up a notch from the Original blend. It takes all of the goodness that is the Original and adds a spicy pepper blend that is forward leaning with Cayenne pepper. The spice level is nice and smoky without being a punch in the mouth hot. It was really nice on Ribs and Pork Chops.

Do Boyz Zombie Butt Dust

Don’t let the name scare you away. This blend is a combination of the Lemon Pepper blend and the Hott Butt Dust. So it is a wonderful citrus-spicy heat. The lemon and brown sugar counter the heat for a full spectrum rub that will (as they claim on their website) wake your taste buds up from the dead. This was wonderful on a pork tenderloin and on Chicken. It was also wonderful on the potatoes and squash I grilled up with it.
