About Christopher Lower

In 2002, I caught a virus while travelling for business and wound up with an infection that settled into the enzymes in the fluid that surrounds my heart, causing the heart muscle tissue to inflame and enlarge.

That began my heart health journey, which included; tons of medications, a pacemaker, defibrillator, an LVAD (Left Ventricular Assist Device), the transplant list, & in May of 2014 a heart transplant.

As a 6’2″ former football player I hated diets. To go on one, meant to come off of it someday. To have success I had to change my lifestyle. I hated the denial aspect of diets I needed to be able to eat the foods I wanted but find a way to make them healthy. I needed to lose the salt without sacrificing taste.

I have an incredible wife and three great children that have been my reason for being and fighting through all of these health challenges. They have also been my co-conspirators, sous chefs, tasters and critics in my efforts to make our family’s meals healthier and tastier too.

This blog is help my fellow sojourners into a low/no sodium lifestyle. I will provide recipes, tips, tricks, tools, and products that fit into this lifestyle. I won’t put it on this site if I haven’t tried it. I am always on this journey to find the best low/no sodium solutions, and I hope to learn from you as well.

UPDATE

Christopher received the gift of a second heart transplant in December of 2017. Due to the suppression of his immunity system he was not able to fight off an infection he contracted a few days after his transplant that ultimately took his life.

His wife Mary and his kids, friends and supporters relaunched Hacking Salt with the passion, community focus and low/no sodium recipes that Christopher began.
