Can I Eat Low Sodium at Long John Silvers

There’s some great new for my fellow fish-lovin’ low sodium fans! You might think that Long John Silver’s would be off the list of places where we can safely find a low sodium meal. For the most part, you are right, but Long John Silver’s now offers a baked version of shrimp and cod. These baked items are safely lower in sodium than their fried versions.

It is really cool that they now offer baked options. They still need to work on the sodium in their side offerings. The problem is, they have these safe entrees, but load them up with sides in their “Baked Meals” section, where if we aren’t careful, can push the sodium in the meal over 1000 mg.!! So we need to do some custom ordering to put together a safe low sodium meal.

Let discuss what numbers we are considering safe. The USDA/FDA recommends 2300 mg per day for a person with a healthy heart. The American Heart Association (AHA) and the Mayo Clinic recommend only 1500 mg a day for a person with heart issues or high blood pressure. So we are looking to put together a meal, and not have to order off of the kid’s menu. A meal means and entree, a side order, and a beverage. We would want this to fall between 500 and 700 mg. We got the Long John Silver’s nutrition information from their website.

Here is what you can eat and be Low Sodium at Long John Silvers

Option 1:

Baked Cod 1 piece – 390 mg

Baked Potato – 361 mg

(no sauces)

Total is 751 mg.

Option 2:

Baked Shrimp 3 pieces – 105 mg

Tartar Sauce – 110 mg

Baked Potato – 361 mg

Total is 576 mg

Everything else is fried and puts you over 1000 mg to get a meal. Hopefully Long John Silver’s will continue to reduce sodium in their menu. Do you miss fish? Now you don’t have to! If you want a low sodium fish and chips, then check out my recipe!

The only chicken still on their menu is the tenders. Each single tender is 570 mg each. So if you ate more than 1 tender at a time it would be bad.
