Low Sodium Slow Cooker Turkey Chili
Chili is a staple at our house. I like this recipe so much it is the recipe pictured on the cover of my first low sodium cookbook. We make this slow cooker turkey chili all the time. Whether it’s for tailgating at a game, or just for a comfort meal at home. This chili has all the flavor and none of the salt as canned chili. You can also control the heat depending on your personal palate.
Make your own Salt Free Chili Seasoning
The true success of this chili is the salt free chili seasoning to flavor it all. The pre-made packets of chili seasoning you find at the store are sodium bombs and knock chili off our menu. The same can be said for canned chili as well. Sodium can run as high as 400 mg per packet and 600 mg per can of chili.
There is a brand of low sodium chili mix, Williams Original No Salt Added Packets you can get them on Amazon, or at Healthy Heart Market. If you order from Healthy Heart Market, make sure you use the code: HACKINGSALT10 at checkout to get 10% off of your order.
I love to whip up my own spice blends at home, from Salt Free BBQ Rub, to Salt Free Taco Seasoning and more. My recipe for Chili seasoning is easy to whip up. You just add all the ingredients to a mason jar, shake to blend and seal her up tight with a lid to last a few months in your pantry.
Use a Slow Cooker to Make Life Easy
We are a busy family. It doesn’t mean we can’t have good food too. We use our slow cooker a lot, all during the year. In the summer, it helps cut down on heat in the kitchen. In fall and winter, we love the smell of the food cooking that fills up the house and keeps your mouth watering all day.
Our eldest daughter is an Alpine Skier and races slalom downhill. We need to keep the team fed and warm on those cold winter weekends on the slopes. Our slow cooker can be plugged into our van or the generator for the warming tents quite easily.
