Low Sodium Hamburger and Hot Dog Buns

Low Sodium Hamburger and Hot Dog Buns

Bread. We love it, but it typically can contain a third of the sodium amount for any dish it is involved with. Sandwiches, Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, etc. Especially as it is used heavily as a preservative in most store bought breads. Preservatives like salt are added to keep the bread from molding too quickly, but it also wreaks havoc on our diet. So we are looking for the best low sodium hamburger and hot dog buns we can find.

Making Buns From Scratch

Many of us on this low sodium journey have resorted to baking our own, which can be wonderful in many ways, from the incredible aromas while cooking and the fluffy goodness of that first bite. The problem is, most of us sadly don’t have time to bake our bread fresh daily, or weekly. So we need sources of low sodium bread choices that are convenient, affordable, and tasty.

Kings Hawaiian Bread and Buns

There are many low sodium bread offerings out there ( like the Ezekiel Brand Breads) but they are sorely lacking in the taste category. I want to call your attention though to two choices I have found that are worthy of your investigation. They are the hamburger buns and hot dogs from King’s Hawaiian.

If you are looking for low sodium hamburger and hot dog buns, that taste great, these will do the trick. They are found fairly easily in most larger chains of grocery stores. You can click here for their store locator to find out which stores by you would carry them.

The King’s Hawaiian buns are famously sweet so the taste is great. Make sure you choose the Original Hamburger buns. They have only 135 mg of sodium per bun. Typically a hamburger bun contains 230 mg or higher per bun.

The Original Hawaiian Sweet Hot Dog buns also are only 135 mg per bun. Compared to most hot dog buns that start at 210 mg of sodium, this is also a nicely reduced amount.

The buns can also be used for sandwiches, sloppy-joes, and so much more. I like to have them with my Low Sodium BBQ Pulled Pork. Plus we use them when grilling low sodium cheeseburgers.

You can grab the Hot Dog buns off of Amazon if you don’t have a local store. If you click the link and purchase, it is an affiliate link and helps in the production of this blog.

  1. One thing I may have missed was an article on low-salt fries. For instance, if you buy frozen cascadian frozen fries – those have 5 mg salt. Others, like Ore Ida, have 280 mg salt per serving or more. The simply potatoes hash browns also are very low – either 5 or 10 mg.

I typically make my own fries and when cut fresh have less than 5 mg salt per serving as well.

  2. Margaret Jacobsen

Their little dinner rolls are good for slider sandwiches. The company also makes small hoagie buns.
